Description

Pterosaur is the right word, but you can call this one a pterodactylus too without being wrong.

Pterodactylus was the first pterosaur specie to be discovered back in 1780. Lots of discussion was caused because of it going from evolution, religion and what on earth this thing actually was. When more pterodactylus and -saurs were discovered more became clear, but what kept being difficult was determing what exactly belonged to the Pterodactlys genus and what not.

Nowadays we know there are two species: P. antiquus and P. kochi. Okay, sort of, there are still quite some undescribed or not fairly well described specimens left so it might change in the future. And there's also P. scolopaciceps (Aerodactylus) which is in a sister clade to Pterodactyloidea.
What we know too is its size: though it was for a long time thought that it was a really small pterosaur with a wingspan of only 50 cm, it has now turned out that they grew to an animal with a wingspan of about a meter.
Also, Pterodactylus had a comb made of soft tissue. Even two: one on the posterior region of the head and a pointed one at the back of the skull. How large they were and if the two were connected is not known, but we do know that the one on the back of the skull pointed slightly upwards.
