The Fighting Dinosaurs

Description

The Gobi Desert, 74 million years ago.

A Velociraptor mongoliensis sits carefully hidden on her nest while the sun drops slowly towards the horizon. She has chosen this place carefully: it's located on top of a dune so she can have a clear view of her surroundings, but she's also protected from most of the elements. Her mate has just left to search for food during dusk and the incoming night when an intruder finds itself a way to her nest.
It's a subadult Protoceratops andrewsi, an omnivore that lives from everything it can find. With her partner not around she uses her camouflage to not pull any attention so the small frilled dinosaur won't spot her, but to no avail: it climbs up the dune. It's not sure if it has seen her or just happens to choose this route, but it doesn't matter, if it finds eggs it will try to get them.
The two animals come face to face while the sun disappears behind the horizon. The Velociraptor puffs up her feathers and hisses to intimidate the danger, but the Protoceratops is stubborn and persistant. The mother betrays there are eggs available by not making place for it. The intruder doubs for a moment, but then goes for its target.

Hisses and grunts dwell down from the dune as the two dinosaurs come to a clash: feathers fly in the air and skin gets carved. Both fighting for their lives now, the animals find themselves at the edge of a deep slope on the dune. When the Protoceratops grabs the Velociraptor's arm with its beak, it breaks it instantly whereupon the small carnivore manages to drive one of its toe claws into the omnivore's neck. It hits an artery and a few seconds later the Protoceratops loses conscience. At the same time the sand can't take the wild movements of the animals anymore and collapses, dragging the two dinosaurs with it. The Velociraptor can't escape since its arm is still stuck in its oponnent's beak.
As they roll down, more sand comes loose and when they come to a stop at the foot of the dune, the sand falls on top of them and crushes them by its weight. Unable to move, the little theropod can't escape from the bite of the now dead enemy and suffocates.
The desert will keep them hidden from the world untill they are dug up again more than 70 million years later, their battle still frozen in time.
