Nea - Spotted Hubur newt

Description

For the Nea project of Joshua Knüppe: hyrotrioskjan.deviantart.com/

Although Nea is famous for its large deserts, there are places suitable for non-desert animals, even amphibians.
One of the latter is the Spotted Hubur newt, a small animal of about 15 cm long. They are genetically engineered Alpine newts, a specie from Terra's continent Europe that can be found at heights of up to 2500 meters.
Spotted Huburs look a lot like them, but are a tad bigger: males up to 15 cm long, whereas females can reach 20. Their colour pattern has changed a bit too: males have the same orange throat, but their bellies are sand coloured and they lack the white spotted flanks. Females look like the males, but they are completely dark grey with the spots being less clear.
Their most remarkable feature though, are the skin folds along their sides and legs, making them able to take in more oxygen via their skin. It's a nice example of surface increasement, that can be seen everywhere in nature. Other amphibians that have this adaptation are for example Earth's Titicaca water frog and the giant salamander.
Spotted Hubur newts can be found all over the Hubur delta and the rivers that are connected with the East and South-East side of the Kurnugian Sea. The water has to be fresh water of course, brackish and salt water are deadly. Also a large part of the Neanean alps are part of their range, though they can only be found at heights of up to 1500 meters. Oxygen levels are too low heigher and to be able to survive there, they need some more years of independant evolution.
